I ran into a similar issue last year, and turns out a sudden spike in unusual traffic was caused by someone testing an IP Stresser on my server. It messed with server response time and caused issues with my rankings too. Once I blocked the IP ranges and added extra filters at the firewall level, things went back to normal pretty quick. Worth checking your logs for any strange repeated hits.
