Benchmarking is a service that is provided by Google Anayltics that shows any change in the traffic of one's site is actually responsible for the individual webmaster's action or it is overall fluctuations in the niche. This can be better explained by an example that if you see any large change in your traffic (suppose US traffic) whether it may be positive or negative, then the benchmarking feature shows you that your competitors and other site owners of your niche are also seeing this or only its just you.
