Using Backlinks for Referral Traffic for your Forum

Has anyone used backlinks as not a ranking factors and just for getting referral traffic for your forum? If yes, then how do you guys do it. Please shares some thoughts.

Yeah, many webmasters have done it. I personally did it quite a few times.
Suppose I found out a blog which gets tons of traffic in my niche then I generally contact them asking about featuring my forum in one of their posts. I say them that its okay if they don't give me do-follow link. It works maximum time bringing a ton traffic from the host site.

Its called forum marketing for forum promotion. Its the best effective way to get the most targeted referral traffic.
