Work on the latest subscribers such as which are 6 months old.
You said yourself that many emails are untouched so I am guessing probably they are dead anyway.
So, trashing the list will be a good idea. My say if you mail them anyway many people won't just recognize you, it will probably end up going into spam. Is it a single opt-in or double opt-in list?
