Manually built Links are only safe & nothing else?

I heard a lot of webmasters say that now in the present day its only safe to build the links manually. But what about the links which are not built or gained manually. Are they going to hurt my site? I am very much confused right now. Plz help.

Yeah, its true that manually built links are much safer but this doesn't really mean that all other links are on the red zone. Suppose, you built a content which is extremely good and rare. As, a result of that it got viral and within couple of days you earned a lot of links. Then its not going to hurt your site.

Links earned due to great content are not considered as spam. Saying only manually built links are good is not right at all.
