What exactly is the job of a moderator in a forum? Is that only to delete spam posts and regulating them?

No, moderator work are of many types. Yeah, deleting and regulating is one of them but their work includes many things such as creating community spirit, making aware of the members about community rules & keeping it clean, creating forum content when necessary, answer any forum related or niche related query etc. Moderators have to be patient to do their job so its not easy to be a moderator of a large forum.

The moderator's job in the forum is to monitor the behavior of the members to maintain the terms and conditions as well as to balance the discussion.

Moderator are like the silent heroes of a forum. They may not come to presence a lot but they definitely do the heavy lifting. Deleting and regulating is only part of their job.
