Does Mobile Optimization really effecting ranking?

Does Mobile Optimization really effecting ranking during the recent Google updates? Some are telling me that mobile optimized sites are not that much effected.

I don't think that its true. I have seen many sites which are mobile optimized but stiil got hit pretty bad.

if you have not yet updated your site, I would strongly encourage you to do so soon. If you haven’t been hit by Google yet, it could only be a matter of time as this update rolls out over the coming weeks. And as internet traffic increases more and more on mobile devices, and with the advent of smart watches, Google’s favourability towards mobile friendly sites will only increase with it. More algorithm updates are likely to follow, leaving you and your website left in the lurch. Google – The Internet Lord – has spoken.
