To pick the wrong keywords.If you pick highly competitive keywords dominated by established sites all your SEO efforts will be a waste of time.Use the keywords that are not too competitive but have a reasonable search volume.

If you are involved into any blackhat seo activities, then it is not at all good thing. If you are doing keyword stuffing, then avoid doing that or any paid links, reciprocal links are also not a good idea.
